Distribution of Goalimpact

$
0
0
Following a discussion on Twitter with the fellow analysts @gnepon and @cchappas on distributions of player metrics, we thought we can add insight by publishing the distributions of Goalimpact values in our DB.

Before presenting the result some words of cautions. The distribution is the distribution of all players in our database. It is not the distribution of all players on the world. The top 10% of all players in the database are probably top 0.000001% of all players on the world (made-up number. You get the point).

The shape of the distribution on the left-hand side is given by the number of lower leagues in the database. As there are unlikely to be better players on this planet than those in the database, the right-hand side should be reflecting the tail of the true distribution of player performance.

Basis for this analysis are all 49,285 players in our database that were registered as active as on the 1st of February 2014. There are no restrictions on league level or geography. Just everything.

OK. Enough disclaimer. Here is the beef.

How to read that? The x-axis defines intervals of Goalimpact values and the y-axis denotes the percentage of players in that range. 21.3% of all players have a Goalimpact between 95 and 99. This is the interval with most players inside followed by 90 to 94.

If you are a team manager of a Bundesliga club, you most likely will want to avoid relegation. If this is your only aim, you should seek to staff your team with players that are among the best 25% of all players in the database, i.e. with player that have a Goalimpact of 100 or higher. If you are more ambitious and you'd like to qualify for the Europa League, you already need to search among the top 10% of all players and set your cut-off at a Goalimpact of 105. But for Champions League qualification even this is not good enough. you will need to look out for top 5% players, 110 or better.

The point is that the number of players available that are good enough for your objective shrinks very fast with the league target rank you aim for. If you want to be better than Borussia Dortmund, only top 0.5% players are good enough. Go and try to find player that are better than 125. This is what Bayern Munich should aim for if wining the German championship is their prime target. Apparently, they have bigger aims than that, because they are stuffed with 0.1% players. So that is what you need to contend for the Champions League title. So it is no surprise that the prices for the best players go ballistic. It is a very inelastic supply curve. Only 61 players have 140 or more. They carry all the profit you can with a Champions League profit in them.

For the math literate among you that know how to read a log-scale histogram, here is the same chart again. If you can't read it. Doesn't matter. It is basically the nerdy version of the chart above.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Paris Saint-Germain: Stats for Lineups

This is a game of two very good sides. The chances for Leverkusen to advance are better than many expect. Still PSG is the favorite. They have some world-class in their starting XI and no weak links. For Leverkusen Son and Spahic are well below the average team quality.

Julian Brandt is on the bench. One of the most talented young German players. Will be exciting to see him, but his lack of experience make it risky. But he is certainly an option if PSG is in the lead.

Manchester City vs. FC Barcelona: Stats for Lineups

A lot of world-class is here on the pitch. Not only Barcelona, but also Manchester City has an exceptionally good squad. Weak spot for city is Kolarov, though that is complaining on a very high level. To speak of a weak spot in Barcelona is ridiculous. However, if we need to name one being force by a gun, we'd pick Jordi Alba.

Arsenal FC - Bayern München: Rated Line-ups

The best German team visits the second best German team in this match. Many great Germans will be on the pitch, two of them for Arsenal. Özil and Mertesacker stick out in Arsenal's team. Bayern even left two world-class player on the bench. Müller and Schweinsteiger may enter later. We see Bayern as favorite even in the German part of London.

There is some great quality in Milan, but we see also some weak spots. Atletico doesn't show such weak links and hence we consider it to be the favorite in this tie.

Europa League: Round of Last 32

Just quickly, here are our predictions for advancing to the Round of last 16 in the Europa League. Looks reasonable, just we are unsure about Razgrad. The rating looks way too high. Probably the Bulgarian league is not yet sufficiently integrated into the Goalimpact database. We need more international games or transfers to get that right. Due to a database error we currently can't compute the rating of Maccabi Tel Aviv, so that is left out.

Hamburger SV under different trainers

It is not an easy season for fans - and players - of the Hamburger SV. The results were worse than the already low expectation and with Mirko Slomka now already the fourth trainer tries to improve this. We will have a short look on what players they chose.

Fink spent only the first five games of the season on the bench as trainer. He had 17 different players in the starting XI, but the red 9 of them were the backbone and played most of the time. He gained only 4 points in the five games despite a good average Goalimpact of 109.1 in his starting players. However, with hindsight, the results weren't that bad considering they lost against Dortmund, Schlake and Hertha that all play a strong season. Against Braunschweig they won and only the loss against Hoffenheim can maybe considered as below par, depending on your ambition.

Never the less, he was kicked and Rodolfo Cardoso took over as interim coach for one game. After that it was...

Bert van Marwijk

Bert stayed 16 games and failed to improve the table position with these players.

In total 21 players were at least once in the starting during his time. Three players from the former backbone saw their playing time greatly reduced:
  • Jacques Zoua who was replaced mainly by Pierre-Michel Lasogga
  • Defenders Lasse Sobiech and Dennis Diekmeier. For them Marcell Jansen and the 17yo Jonathan Tah received their chances.
In total, van Marwijk's teams had a lower Goalimpact. They averaged only 106.5. However, apart from letting Tah play, this was hardly van Marwijk's choice. Rene Adler missed a few games injured and his replacement Drobny just isn't that good. Van der Vaart were also out some games due to injury, as was Maximilian Beister.

Mirko Slomka

It takes only one victory to become the new hope of HSV. Slomka won his first game against Dortmund with these 11 starting players.

That is closed to the optimal team according to Goalimpact, given that van der Vaart and Beister are injured. It had an average Goalimpact of 106.2, but that could raise to 110 if van der Vaart returns. Beister, unfortunately, will not return this season. Given the lower Goalimpact, the victory against Dortmund was also driven by luck, but with a 110-team the direct matches against other relegation candidates indeed should instill some hope.

Schalke has an excellent offensive play and some talent in the defense. But make no mistake, the favorite staffed with world-class. Current world-class, not just future world-class as in Schalke.

Galatasaray vs Chelsea FC

Galatasaray has some weak spots with Telles and Hajrovic among their star squad led by Sneijder. Mourinho says he thinks Drogba is the best striker in the world, but that must have been the Drogba 5 years ago. Today he still has a good rating of 110, but that is hardly scary.

Backtesting: Europa League Round of Last 32

Just forecasting the future is only half of the fun. The real excitement comes with backtesting which of the predictions turned out to be true or false. Let's check our predictions on the Europa League round of last 32.

Anzhi Makhachkala95.5 -KRC Genk102.4
Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk112.2 -Tottenham Hotspur115.4
Juventus122.1 -Trabzonspor106.4

AFC Ajax114.1 -RB Salzburg122.0
Maccabi Tel Aviv#NV -FC Basel111.0n.a.
FC Porto122.1 -Eintracht Frankfurt106.8

Only four out of 15 ties saw the favorite being eliminated. The biggest surprises were Valencia defeating Kiev and Real Betis beating Rubin Kazan. And no, Ajax's defeat by Salzburg was no surprise and so wasn't the elimination of Lazio Roma by PFC Ludogorets Razgrad. The winner had, on average, 3.4 more Goalimpact than the loser, indicating the discriminatory power of the algorithm.

All title contenders, Juventus, Porto and Salzburg, are still in the competition. The two top runners up, Kiev and Donetsk, were eliminated. Now The Spurs, SL Benfica and SSC Napoli are the strongest teams after the favorite three.

Prediction: Europa League Round Last 16

The round of last 32 of predicted very well. Let's look what the future brings to us in the next round.

AZ Alkmaar102.5-Anzhi Makhachkala95.5
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad112.7-Valencia CF104.3
FC Porto122.1-SSC Napoli115.1
Olympique Lyon103.1-Viktoria Plzeň109.1
Sevilla FC107.7-Real Betis93.3
Tottenham Hotspur115.4-SL Benfica115.5
FC Basel111.0-RB Salzburg122.0
Juventus122.1-ACF Fiorentina105.1

Closest call is Spurs against Benfica. I'd go for a draw if that would be possible. Porto vs Napoli will also be a struggle between two title contenders.

Bwin has a different view on some matches. The numbers in the following table are the odds to win the competition. I take that as (inverse) measure of team quality.

AZ Alkmaar41-Anzhi Makhachkala81.0
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad41-Valencia CF13.0
FC Porto21-SSC Napoli7.5
Olympique Lyon41-Viktoria Plzeň51.0
Sevilla FC21-Real Betis34.0
Tottenham Hotspur8-SL Benfica11.0
FC Basel31-RB Salzburg8.0
Juventus3.25-ACF Fiorentina13.0

I tend to agree with bwin on Razgrad. But then again, my personal record of betting without support of algorithms is terrible. So maybe, math is right yet again.

Top Football Talents of the World

One of the key applications of Goalimpact is player scouting. The selection of players depend on many factors and many of them are not covered by Goalimpact, so hiring a player just because he is rated high is not a good idea. However, if a player is rated low, then hiring him might not be a good idea even though he fits in other aspects. In short, Goalimpact is valuable in short listing players that scouting is worthwhile.

Particular difficult is the scouting of talents. The future of young players is particularly uncertain. It is difficult to compare two players of an age different as low as half a year because they are in different stages of the development. Many scouts fail to account for this and hence we observe the Relative Age Effect. The difficulty is further increased by the lack of data availability. Hardly any youth league is tracked the same way as big professional soccer leagues. This makes it difficult to compare players with known peers.

By construction, Goalimpact ratings fully account for the relative age of players and, as heavily adjusted plus/minus scores, they run on very limited amount of data. This makes their application in talent scouting particularly valuable. To check this, we compare the top talents according to transfermarkt.de with the talents produced by Goalimpact.

We do this in both ways. Let's first look at Goalimpact's opinion on transfermarkt.de's picks of the top talents.

Luke Shaw is the most expensive talent
on tm.de. Is it because he is the best or
because he plays Premier League?
Only two of the top twenty players were not covered by our rating. 17 of the 18 rated players are
predicted to be good enough for Champions League if the development is following the normal aging curve. The only exception is Niklas Stark from 1. FC Nürnberg that is not expected to be regular player on top European level in future.

To put the ratings into perspective, in total we have 2849 player U20 players in the database. So most of transfermarkt.de's picks are in the top 10% quantil according to Goalimpact's estimation of the talent. Given that the market value per se is not directly an estimate of talent, but also includes other factors such as age, position and current league, this is a very good fit. But 10% of 2849 is 285 players and not only 20, so the natural next question is 'Which players did transfermarkt.de miss?'.

Here are 20 top talents according to us. We didn't pick just the first twenty, but restricted the search to those with at least 900 minutes observed playing time to ensure that the prediction is not too uncertain. The given rank is the the position in the unfiltered list. As we want to recommend talents to interested teams, we anonymized the names of those players that are listed below 1 mio. Euro on transfermarkt.de. The lilac names were already on the list above. Andrija Živkovic would be on the list, too, but he didn't make the 900 minutes cut.

Many of the top talents are not having any price tag as they are either too young or play in a league that isn't really covered by transfermarkt.de. But even if we disregard the six youth players on this list, that leaves us with eleven young players playing in adult leagues with an predicted development that makes them interesting for top-tier clubs.

Given this insight, some prices are quoted surprisingly low on transfermarkt. We can't judge how reliable those prices are, but there seems to be a lot of value in looking for talents off the paved roads. Even players with experience in non-youth leagues that are predicted to be as good as Max Meyer are often listed as below 1 million Euros. Even if the real price is higher than what transfermarkt.de expects, that seem to be still many bargains.

Following my post on the top young talents of the world, Simon Gleave asked a good question
Ok. That is agood way of checking if the rating is working. We didn't choose 2000, but 2007 as reference year due to better data availability. Here is the list of the top 25 talents according to Goalimpact that we would have published based on results up to and including season 2006/2007.

We can categorize the players on this list according to if they were listed as talents by tm.de (proxied by a historic market value higher or equal than 1 million Euro) and whether they turned out to be really top-class (proxied by current market value greather or equal than 5 million Euro). Hence we have 4 sets as follows.

15 out of 25 players on the list were also listed as talents by transfermarkt. Out of those 15, 10 became top-class players with a current market values above 5M€. Three, Gareth Bale, Hinguain and Agüero are super stars now.

Neven Subotic could have been bought
by you one year before Dormund did it.
60% of the player that were not listed as talents by transfermarkt, also became top-class players. Most notably, the Bender brothers and Neven Subotic were identified well before they were transfer targets by top-notch Bundesliga teams.

What to make from this? If you'd buy all tm.de talents on the list in August 2007 at the then listed prices, you have to pay 116,850,000 € and if you sell them today, they earn you 295,675,000 €. This is unsurprising a lot more as those players are now in their prime age and hence worth more than when 18yo. If we take this as the normal value development, then we can expect a value increase of 150% in the time interval fom 18yo to 25yo.

Doing the same math for the not tm.de listed players yield some other numbers. Buying all 10 players that are listed by Goalimpact, but not by transfermarkt, would costs you 3,800,000 €. Selling them now would earn you 117,525,000 €. An increase in value of roughly 3000%. You don't need to be rich to buy great players, being smart is good enough.

Premier League clubs are complaining that they are required to have homegrown players in their teams while, according to them, there is little talent available. So the rules of supply and demand dictate high prices for the few top young English players. Or so it goes.

An alternative version of this story is, that English clubs invest too little in generating new young players and hence created the shortage themselves. The big clubs should open youth performance centers such as in many continental countries to support the education of the next generation. Due to the decreasing prices this may actually be cheaper in the long run than maintaining the status quo.

We want to put these hypothesis to a test, by looking at the top talents with English nationality accoring to Goalimpact. Goalimpact is a massively adjusted plus/minus score for football that rates all players world-wide. If we see few talents compared to other nations there, the lack of youth performance centers might really be a problem. If we see also few players at low prices, then the EPL clubs may also have a point in their short sighted view on the player market. So here is the list. As always, we anonymize players that are listed at values below one million Euros because we provide this as a scouting service to clubs. If you are club manager or trainer and are interested in the player names, please contact us at info@goalimpact.com.

First finding is that there are not too many players that have a expected carreer peak of above 130. Given the risk involved in the development of young players, top EPL teams may not want to sign below that threshold. Given that English players are unlikely to be worse than Spanish or Dutch by nature, there is apparently really a lack of development in English youth football. As a result, the supply of young players has hard times to meet the enforced demand by top EPL clubs. So there seems to be some truth in the second hypothesis. English clubs should set up youth performance centers.

On the other side, the expensive talents are exclusively those playing either already in the Premier League or in the Championship. That is suprising because there are many talents in League One and League two, too. We'd go as far as to claim that this should be enough to meet the EPL demand without EPL teams being forced to pay scarcity prices. Therefore, it seems difficult to fully support the first hypothesis that EPL teams have too few talents to sign and hence are in a bidding contest for the best. We'd put out an alternative hypothesis:
EPL clubs do not scout in League One and Two as much as they should and hence miss a lot of promising talents. The lack of scouting scope creates artifical scarcity.
Luke Shaw is the most expensive talent
world-wide on tm.de. Is it because he is the
best or because he plays Premier League?
Especially poorer clubs should adopt their scouting behaviour. About half of the players listed above as "<1M€" will eventually become top-class. Why not leave the known talents to those teams that don't care about money as much as you do and scout off the paved roads?

A last obersvation: Only one out of the top 25 English talents plays outside of England. So we agree with Steve
It will certainly not work for everybody, but currently apparently only very few follow that path.

Backtesting: Europa League Round Last 16

Let's see howe our prediction of the round of last 16 worked. He predicted the green clubs to advance.

AZ Alkmaar102.5-Anzhi Makhachkala95.5
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad112.7-Valencia CF104.3
FC Porto122.1-SSC Napoli115.1
Olympique Lyon103.1-Viktoria Plzeň109.1
Sevilla FC107.7-Real Betis93.3
Tottenham Hotspur115.4-SL Benfica115.5
FC Basel111.0-RB Salzburg122.0
Juventus122.1-ACF Fiorentina105.1

Only five out of eight pairs correct. We have done better in the past. Put the difference in team quality is much lower now and hence the outcome is more difficult to predict. On average, the winner had 2.5 Goalimpact points more than the losing team. This indicates that despite the close team strength, there is explanatory power in our algorithm.

Now let's see how the betting markets fared.

AZ Alkmaar41-Anzhi Makhachkala81.0
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad41-Valencia CF13.0
FC Porto21-SSC Napoli7.5
Olympique Lyon41-Viktoria Plzeň51.0
Sevilla FC21-Real Betis34.0
Tottenham Hotspur8-SL Benfica11.0
FC Basel31-RB Salzburg8.0
Juventus3.25-ACF Fiorentina13.0

They also have only five pairs correct. Both we and Bwin predicted Salzburg to advance and hence, we'd call the win of Basel the biggest surprise. And following the game, indeed the outcome was unlucky for Salzburg with respect to the missed chances, despite Basel earned the win by a sound defensive strategy.

From the remain clubs, according to us either Porto or Juventus will win the cup, and Benfica has some chances, too. According to the betting markets, it will be Juve and nobody else. Benfica and Porto are the runner ups, but already with distinctly lower chances.

Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona: Goalimpacts of the Lineups

The duel of two of the best teams of the world. Both have excellent players, Real Madrid even the best player of the world. But it is not only one football god playing tonight. It is a complete pantheon. You need to search for slightly lower quality with a magnification glass. And even then they will be players that are among the best in next to any other team of the world.

Real Madrid

In the defense, Carvajal seems to be the weaker side. Goalimpact never seems to become a fan of Bale, too.

FC Barcelona

The quality of the player at Barcelona is generally higher. Xavi is not young anymore. Still excellent, but only a shadow of his great past when he ruled a game. Jordi Alba seems to be the weak spot in the defense. Neymar, as Bale, needs to show more effectiveness to be loved by Goalimpact. And, let's hope Pinto doesn't need to play. He doesn't seem to be good enough for this game.

Here are the expected results for both legs of all fixtures. Following up on a discussion with ClubElo on Twitter, the prediction is done this time on goal differentials. For comparison, I also extracted the analogous values from BetFair.

For the more visual minded of you, here a chart. Betfair's prediction is on the y-axis, ClubElo and Goalimpact on the x-axis.

The domestic matches, Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona, are rated more or less equal by all three sources. The difference stems from the international fixes. Funnily, ClubElo used to complain that Goalimpact moves too slowly on international fixtures, while we used to argue that ClubElo moves too fast. If the Betting odds are a valid reference, we both had a point. ClubElo's prediction spans roughly 60% (1/0.6363) wider than Betfairs, while ours is 60% narrower. We will take this as a reason for looking into the calibration again. Hasn't been done since some time.

ClubElo has a much better R². Goalimpact's R² suffers mainly due to the fact that it upholds ManU's players as very good. Something we strongly still believe to be true, but that doesn't make them a good team. Not this season in any case. Here we clearly suffer due to the fact that we aim at predicting player performance and not team performance.

Update:
We added the expected result given the starting XI of each game and the actual results to the table. I also added the EuroClubIndex's predictions. Currently this leads to a current standing of

Curious to see Pinto's game. He is strikingly low rated for a Barca player. Barca expected to win by 0.684 goals anyway.
